How to find a resort that suits you

Kilometres of piste tell you how long you will stay entertained

A resort with under 30 kilometres of piste can be exactly right for a long weekend, or for children who will stay on the same slopes anyway. If you are going for a week and want new runs every day, look for a hundred kilometres or more. The truly large areas in the Alps link several valleys together, and you will not cover all of it regardless.

Altitude is the single best indicator of snow

If the summit sits above 2,500 metres, chances are good there is snow from December to April, even in mild winters. Lower resorts can have excellent conditions, but they depend more on how the winter turns out. In Scandinavia the latitude makes up for the mountains being lower.

The split between green, blue, red and black

The colour bar on each resort shows how the runs divide. If you are travelling with beginners, look for plenty of green and blue, and check that there is an easy way down from the top. If you want something to test yourself on, the share of black and the terrain off the marked runs matter more than the total kilometres.

Snow reliability

The number from 1 to 5 is an overall judgement based on altitude, location and how much snow the resort can make itself. Five means you will almost always get to ski. Two means you should check conditions before you book.

When to go

The main season in the Alps runs from mid-December to mid-April. To avoid the most expensive weeks, January outside New Year and the end of March are usually the best compromise between price, snow and daylight. In Scandinavia the days get properly long in March and April, and in northern Norway you can ski in sunshine well into May.

Japan has the most predictable snow in January and February. The United States and Canada vary a great deal between the Rockies, which stay dry and cold all winter, and the east coast, where the weather turns quickly. If you want to ski during the northern summer, head south: Chile, Argentina and New Zealand run from June to October.

Skiing all year round

A handful of places stay open outside the winter season. The glacier resorts in the Alps and Norway run through the summer, and the indoor centres have snow twelve months a year, whether you are in Oslo, Manchester or Dubai.
